Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a disorder characterized by psychiatric, physiological, and somatic symptoms that affect women of reproductive age. Since the etiology of PMS has not been fully elucidated, there is no universally accepted treatment approach. The primary goal of treatment is to alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life. Cognitive behavioral therapy, acupuncture, regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and mineral supplementation are among the complementary treatment methods. Magnesium (Mg) is an essential mineral that plays a role in numerous biochemical processes in the human body and contributes to the prevention and treatment of various diseases. Deficiency of magnesium has been associated with several psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, depression, irritability, insomnia, headache, dizziness, tremor, and psychotic behavior. Accordingly, magnesium may be an effective agent in reducing PMS symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between premenstrual syndrome and magnesium.
