Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the psychological status, sleep quality, and nutritional habits of older adults during the pandemic.

Materials and Methods: Volunteer individuals aged 65 and over participated in the study. A survey form developed by the researchers was administered face-to-face to the participants. The survey included demographic information, anthropometric measurements of height (cm) and body weight (kg), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the COVID-19 Fear Scale, the REZZY Eating Disorders Scale, and the Mini Nutritional Assessment Test (MNA).

Results: This study was conducted with a total of 120 individuals aged 65 years and older: 55 males (45.8%) and 65 females (54.2%). The mean age of the participants was 71.8±6.81 years. The mean body mass index (BMI) was 29.1±4.46 kg/m2 in male participants and 31.8±6.30 kg/m2 in female participants (p=0.008). The BDI, MNA total, and REZZY Eating Disorders Scale scores were 12.2±7.03, 26.5±2.66, and 0.58±0.87 in males, and 15.3±8.85, 24.4±3.06, and 0.9±1.04 in females, respectively (p<0.05). 49.2% of females and 23.6% of males had poor sleep quality (p=0.004). The BDI scores of individuals at risk of malnutrition (18.6±7.4) were found to be higher than those of individuals with normal nutritional status (12.2±7.51) (p<0.001).

Conclusion: During the pandemic period, stress and anxiety can lead to sleep problems, depression, and worsening nutritional status in elderly individuals. Elderly individuals should be evaluated at all times for their nutrition, sleep, and depression to enable early prevention.
